PSA: Nintendo will shut down 3DS and Wii U online play on April 8th

Nintendo has officially set the date and time for the discontinuation of online services for the 3DS and Wii U software. On April 8th, 2024, at 4 PM PT / 7 PM ET, users will bid farewell to online play, leaderboards, and various other data services for these consoles. For those in Japan, the shutdown will occur on the morning of April 9th at 9 AM.

Important Deadline for Unused eShop Balances: As the shutdown approaches, Nintendo has issued a crucial warning to users with an unused eShop balance tied to a Nintendo Network ID. Until March 11th at 10 PM PT, users have the opportunity to link their wallet with a Nintendo Account. This ensures that any remaining funds can be utilized to purchase items for the Nintendo Switch. Even for those without a Switch, the option to create an account and merge funds remains open.

The Spring Shutdown and Continuing Services: Nintendo initially announced the impending spring shutdown several months ago. Despite the discontinuation of SpotPass services and Nintendo Badge Arcade, StreetPass, Pokémon Bank, and Poké Transporter will continue for users still engaged with those features. Notably, the Wii U, one of Nintendo’s least successful consoles, with around 13 million sales, and the Nintendo 3DS, which amassed 75 million sales from its launch in 2010 until its discontinuation in 2020, will see the end of its online services.

Post-Shutdown Possibilities: While the online service shutdown marks the conclusion of online play and related features, Nintendo assures users that, “For the foreseeable future, it will still be possible to download update data and redownload purchased software and downloadable content from Nintendo eShop.” This allows users to maintain access to essential software updates and recover previously acquired content.

Conclusion: As the countdown to the 3DS and Wii U online service shutdown begins, Nintendo urges users to take the necessary steps to link their eShop balances with a Nintendo Account before March 11th. Despite the end of certain online services, Nintendo assures users of continued access to essential functions on the eShop. As we bid farewell to these iconic consoles, the gaming community looks forward to the future innovations and experiences Nintendo has in store.
